The Path from Clinician to Entrepreneur: The Dr. Chris Hoffpauir Story

A Challenging Start in Practice Ownership

Many practitioners dream of owning their own office immediately after graduation. Dr. Chris Hoffpauir did exactly that in 2012, but he quickly realized that clinical excellence and business management are two different skill sets. Reflecting on the launch of his scratch startup, Dr. Chris notes:

“It was the ballsiest and stupidest thing I could have done.”

Within the first year, he had exhausted his startup capital and was facing significant financial losses. Despite his medical expertise, the reality of being a CEO was a role for which dental school had not prepared him. At the urging of his wife, a fellow practice owner who was already seeing success with Silkin Management Group, Dr. Chris decided to implement a formal management system.

The Transition to “Uncommon Sense” Management

Dr. Chris attributes his turnaround to what he calls “uncommon sense,” the application of fundamental business systems that are rarely utilized in clinical settings. By working with Silkin, he shifted his focus from daily fire-fighting to high-level system implementation.

Key Transformations included:

Establishing Culture

Learning to build a team based on loyalty and shared goals rather than just task completion.

Standard Operating Procedures

Implementing job descriptions and manuals that allowed the practice to function without his constant supervision.

Metric Ownership

Training the team to monitor and take responsibility for key performance indicators (KPIs).

The results were transformative. Dr. Chris grew his three-room practice to an annual production of $1.4 million while reducing his clinical schedule to just three days per week. Most notably, his collection rate reached a rare 99 to 104% of fees every month.

Achieving True Professional Freedom

The ultimate goal of the Silkin program is to move the practitioner from "Operator" to "Owner." Today, Dr. Chris reports spending zero hours on the day-to-day management of his practices. This freedom has allowed him to expand his professional footprint far beyond a single dental chair.

His current portfolio and leadership roles include:

  • Multi-Business Ownership: Owner or partner in 15 businesses, ranging from dental labs to artificial intelligence and a jiu-jitsu academy.
  • Industry Leadership: Two-time President of the 9th District Dental Society of Texas and moderator of "The Business of Dentistry," the largest social media community for dentists.
  • Community Impact: Providing between $50,000 and $100,000 in charitable dental treatment annually.

Dr. Chris maintains that the lessons learned through Silkin are "evergreen." When the 2020 pandemic disrupted the industry, his debt-free position and systemic foundation allowed him to not only survive but to acquire a second practice location.
